Bay Area Mandarin Playback
Playback Theatre was founded in 1975 by Jonathan Fox and Jo Salas of the United States. It is an improvisational theatre that focuses on the interaction between the audience and the performers. Playback Theatre is a one-person-one-story theatre located in the Bay Area, dedicated to creating a space for the Chinese community to tell, listen to and respond to stories. Here, we use improvisational drama and music to interpret the stories, feelings, and experiences shared by the storytellers, and give them as gifts to the storytellers and the audience. We believe that everyone's story deserves to be seen and every experience deserves to be listened to.
Whether it is the bits and pieces of life, the collision of cultures, or the exploration of identity and the search for a sense of belonging, we hope to build a bridge connecting the Chinese community in the Bay Area through the form of playback. Playback Theatre is not only a performance group, but also an open, inclusive and resonant sincere community. All Chinese-speaking friends, regardless of their background or where they come from, are invited to come here to share their stories freely and feel each other's voices.
The actors of this troupe are a group of Chinese people from all walks of life in the Bay Area who are interested in and passionate about improvisational drama and community. They receive professional one-person-one-story training and rehearsals on a regular basis, and meet with everyone through public performances, community workshops, etc. Partners who are interested in watching performances or joining the troupe are welcome to contact the troupe.
