What is personal drama therapy?

Personal drama therapy is an individualized form of drama therapy that focuses on using creative, dramatic techniques to help a person explore and address their emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges. It allows individuals to use drama and theatre-based activities—such as role-playing, improvisation, storytelling, and expressive movement—to safely explore personal issues, gain insight into their feelings and behaviors, and foster self-expression. The goal is to help individuals reflect on their inner experiences and external relationships in a non-judgmental, supportive environment, promoting personal growth and healing.


In personal drama therapy, the therapist works closely with the individual to tailor sessions to their specific needs and goals. Techniques may include enacting past experiences, imagining future scenarios, or symbolically representing inner conflicts to facilitate emotional release, build coping strategies, and enhance overall well-being. This approach leverages the unique benefits of drama, such as its capacity for spontaneity, embodiment, and creativity, making it a versatile therapeutic tool for individuals with a wide range of mental health needs. 


This form of therapy is especially useful for those who find traditional talk therapy difficult, as it engages the body, emotions, and imagination, offering multiple ways to explore and resolve issues.

Who are my clients?

I work best with clients that are open to creative approaches or those who find their thoughts difficult to emerge merely through verbal expression. My clients are people of marginalized groups. My clients are those who need space for their voices. My clients have internal strength that they could not recognize in the moment. On my clinical journey so far, I have encountered young children and their families, adolescents and young adults,  female groups, mixed-race clients, and elders at nursing homes. Issues that we worked with include grief, significant life-transitions, trauma, identities, family systems, and peer connections.

What can I offer?

I can offer therapy in both Mandarin and English. I specialize in grief, life transitions, trauma, and anxiety. My treatment is largely trauma-informed and person-centered. I use appropriate mediums of art, movement, and stories through a trauma-informed lens. During the treatment, I will walk along with you to re-express, re-experience, and re-shape your personal stories.
